This is a Limited Second Edition, reprint of the three volume book The Southern Kikuyu- before 1903.
Copyright Richard Leakey, 2007.
One of the often unnoticed tragedies of an era of technological advance and improving communications is the passing from living memory of customs, language and beliefs as small insular pockets of culture are overtaken by the sweep of civilization.
This impressive book is a complete record of the ways of the Kikuyu people, before and during the period of European influence which accompanied road and railway building and political and economic changes in the late 19th Century. It is the major anthropological achievement of the late L.S.B. Leakey and the culmination of his life-long study of the people among whom he was born and raised. Written in the graceful, readable style characteristic of scholarship in the thirties, it draws on the memories of the Elders whose confidant Dr. Leakey became. A once rich source of tradition and culture, passed on intact from generation to generation, was in danger of drying up without trace – this study, revised and published now, some forty years after it was first undertaken, will secure this fascinating collection of information for posterity now that all the last inheritors of the old Kikuyu way of life are dead.
Thanks to Dr. Leakey, and to the collaborators who worked on the manuscript after his death, the Kikuyu mores have been set down – from descriptions of the daily activities of the people, digging, planting, harvesting, care of animals, trading, marriage, tribal raiding, dancing and lawgiving, to the customs connected with sex, linked with rites de passage, religious beliefs, magic and medicine. It is a picture of a successful self-regulating community, in which a strict set of rules and punishments established order and enabled the tribe to survive within its environment.
The autonomy of tribal life all over the world is now being eroded, for better or worse. But this well-rounded study, intricate in its mass of detail, yet straightforward in approach, seeks to make no assertions or comparisons with other cultures. It will thus be an important unbiased primary source for social anthropologists, ethnologists and social scientists, as well as being of great value to all those interested in Africa and its history.
Nothing of what you will read on this website will prepare your for the enthrallment of reading this book. Although written in an almost detached matter-of-fact manner, it is nonetheless so richly edifying, almost stupefying in the way it peels away layers and layers of a people rich in culture, social stratification, inclusivity, democracy, medical and dietary competence …. the list is simply endless.
Quite simply, it is a must buy!

Reaching back in time (as well as looking around us today) to explore both tribal and family cultures is one way we can expand the human psyche into the complex patchworld we call Earth–home. I always feel much more at home once I’ve had a thought about tribal peoples, or even the Anecestors and the trecks out of Africa that were made so many thousands of years ago. Otherwise I feel short-sighted about my own past and future!! I keep a parrot at home just to keep in touch with nature and preserve my humility. He’s quite social and looks after me quite well, likes his dinner in courses and remembers a repertoire of playful evening tasks, like learning a new song, or tossing all the socks out of a drawer as if they were soccer balls. Much more fun than watching most T.V. shows. The Kikuyu have dignity and inner well being and extend their psyches into their environment — as we all could. I had a friend Jim Blanchard who loved Africa. He had a photo he loved — himself and his family with one of the tribal leaders who had gaven Jim a spear. We are afterall in the world, so why not “be” of the natural world ourselves—the Kikuyu are good influences.
i would like to purchase this set as soon as possible.please email me at kimwamz@gmail.com for arrangements.

I keen to lay my hands on the three volumes. Please advise on kakamodo@gmail.com
I bought the set of 3 books from Dr. Richard Leakey ( Son of L.S.B Leakey) no less!!. And I must say that after flipping through the pages, I realized how rich Kikuyu culture is, and how little is left of it, as well as how little I know my mother tongue.
It’s a must buy for anyone interested in our roots and culture, and anyone aspiring to be a Mugikuyu Karenga !
Thank you Dr. Leakey for doing a fine job.Great book. I also just watched you on ALD. Good Job!!! You have taught me to fight on. You look great too. Keep Shinning!!
